Rachel Maddow of MSNBC did a segment December 8, 2009 regarding the proposed Ugandan law that could see homosexuals put to death for their sexual orientation, and another segment with an author of a book, in which the author states that homosexuality can be “healed” or “corrected”. Read the transcript of the show.
Among the many very important topics Maddow addresses in these pieces are statistics the author uses that make it appear that homosexuals are more likely to sexually abuse children and youth than straight people.
This myth is deeply rooted in homophobia. At CCASA, the staff is very aware that most offenders – male or female—are heterosexual, in relationships, and may have children of their own. This has been confirmed by research studies and is accepted by accredited institutions who counsel offenders or survivors.
It is important to remember that sexual abuse is not about sexual attraction, it is about exercising power and control over another person. As a result, many heterosexual offenders will offend against either sex, depending on which child is accessible to them.
CCASA is opposed to any legislation that discriminates on the basis of sexual orientation, age, gender, ability, race, religion, colour, or socio-economic status.
