One of the more pervasive myths of sexual assault is that only young, sexually provocative or alluring women are assaulted, but staff at CCASA know this is far from the truth: anyone can be a victim of sexual assault, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, ability, race, religion, colour, or socio-economic status.
In fact, people with disabilities are one-and-a-half times more likely to be sexually assaulted than people without a disability, and most often the perpetrator is someone who cares for them. Sexual assault is about the abuse of power and control, and people with disabilities, the elderly and children are most vulnerable to this kind of abuse.
